About the Course

This online food handler certificate course focuses on safe food preparation and handling techniques and is intended for anyone that works in food preparation, storage, or service.

The course content is based on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Code. Upon completion of the course, you can immediately print your food handler certificate and wallet card.

This Food Handlers - Safety First Principles course was developed by National Registry of Food Safety Professionals for Food Handlers. This course is accredited by ANAB (ANSI National Accreditation Board) and is accepted by law in Texas.

Course Features

This food handler safety course takes about 1 1/2 hours to complete and is available in English & Spanish with full audio narration.

Our training course works on all computer devices including: smart phones, tablets, laptops, and PCs. If needed, you can conveniently switch back and forth between your phone (or tablet) and your computer, while taking the course, and you will always be returned to your most recent progress. Once you create an account you can log in from any computer or mobile device and train any time, anywhere.

You have 1 year from enrollment to complete this course. You can log in and out of your training account and your place in the course will be saved.

After successfully completing this course and 40 question multiple choice final exam (you must get a 75% to pass), you will be able to immediately print your official certificate.  You will get 2 attempts at the final exam.  If you do not pass the exam you will need to enroll again.

Intended Learning Objectives

This food handler certificate course will teach you the importance of safe food handling as well as how to properly clean and sanitize your establishment.

This course consists of an introduction, seven lessons, and a 40 question multiple choice final exam. Click on each lesson below to view the topics for the intended learning objectives in that lesson.


Basic Food Safety

Food Handlers will be able to identify:

  • The definition of foodborne illness and common foodborne illness symptoms
  • Biological, chemical and physical hazards.
  • Routes of contamination such as, people, animals, cross-contamination, air, water, soil, food-contact surfaces and food.

Personal Hygiene

Food Handlers will be able to identify:

  • How, when, and where to wash their hands.
  • How to use gloves correctly and when to change them.
  • How to care for your hands and fingernails before handling food.
  • What should and should not be worn when handling food.
  • Illness symptoms that must be reported to your manager.
  • Where you should and should not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum or tobacco in the operation.

Time and Temperature

Food Handlers will be able to identify:

  • Food that needs time and temperature control to keep it safe.
  • The Temperature Danger Zone.
  • How to use a thermometer correctly.
  • Requirements for receiving food and non-food items.
  • How to control the time and temperature of food during storage.
  • How to thaw, cook, hold, cool, and reheat food correctly.

Cross-Contamination and Allergens

Food Handlers will be able to identify:

  • How to prevent cross-contamination when storing, prepping and serving food.
  • Signs that indicate food has been contaminated prior to receiving it.
  • How to handle and store chemicals to prevent cross-contamination.
  • The Big Nine food allergens and how to prevent them from causing an allergic reaction.

Cleaning and Sanitation

Food Handlers will be able to identify:

  • The difference between cleaning and sanitizing.
  • How and when to clean and sanitize surfaces.
  • How to set up and use a three-compartment sink correctly.
  • How to use and maintain dishwashers correctly.
  • How to handle garbage correctly.
  • Signs of pests in the operation.

Final Exam

  • 40 multiple-choice questions - you must score at least 75% to pass

Food Handler Certificate

Your food handler card is available to print or save immediately after you complete the course and it will be emailed to you. Your completion data will also be uploaded to National Registry of Food Safety Professionals.

Your printable certificate includes 3 parts: a Certificate of Completion, a wallet card, and a part for your employer to keep on file.

Your certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of completion in the state of Texas.

Texas Recognized Training

This National Registry of Food Safety Professionals Food Handler Training certificate program is accredited by ANAB (ANSI National Accreditation Board) against the ASTM E2659 standard and it accepted in Texas. The approval number is 1039.
